Can You Get Turnitin for Free? Access and Alternatives

You may be able to use Turnitin through a school or organization that provides access. That is different from a public, free individual subscription. AI Detect is an independent service: it does not give you a Turnitin account, run Turnitin's model, or reproduce an official Turnitin report.

Turnitin's individual-license guidance says its similarity detection and grading services are sold to institutions rather than as individual or single-use licenses. Check the institution's arrangements before assuming that creating an account gives you access to a particular feature.

Check the access you already have

Start with your course's assignment instructions or learning platform. Ask your instructor, librarian, or support team whether Turnitin is available, which assignments use it, and which reports students can see. Availability of a similarity report does not automatically mean access to an AI writing report.

If your goal is a draft review, ask whether the course permits a practice submission and how it is handled. Follow the institution's process rather than assuming that any submission can be used as a private test. Report access and assignment settings are decisions for the institution.

Decide which kind of check you need

A similarity report identifies matching text in the sources available to the service. Matches need interpretation: a quotation or reference can match legitimately, while a low similarity result does not establish that every idea is correctly attributed.

An AI writing report evaluates patterns associated with generated writing. It answers a different question. Turnitin's report guide explicitly separates its AI score from its similarity score and says the AI result must not be the sole basis for adverse action against a student.

Neither report replaces checking citations, reading the work, or following the applicable policy on AI assistance.

What a free alternative can do

Can an independent score predict Turnitin?

No particular result is guaranteed. Different services use different models, score definitions, thresholds, and supported inputs. A score in AI Detect cannot be converted into a promised Turnitin score.
